about 5 years ago – Wed, May 08, 2019 at 11:01:39 AM

OH BOY we are 2/3 of the way there and we're so excited!

Hi, it's Christian! The album "Relatable Content" is going in for final tweaks this Wednesday, and it's sounding so good. You can get a sneak peek at it here:

RIGHT? You heard about that one back in this update.

Tour Dates

We are booking venues out on the East Coast in the fervent hope that you will get us to our goal, and we have four dates locked down so far -

  • Oct 4 - Raleigh NC - House Concert with special guest Juliana Finch
  • Oct 6 - Washington DC - New Deal Cafe with special guests The Misbehavin' Maidens
  • Oct 9 - Brooklyn NY - The Way Station with special guest TBD
  • Oct 12 - Somerville MA - Once Lounge with special guest Sarah Donner

And that's just the beginning - we're working on dates and guests in Philadelphia, Baltimore, New Jersey (somewhere) and more! You can help us make this a success with your pledges and shares. And hey, if you have suggestions for nerd-friendly venues, LET US KNOW! You can also host a house concert with the "(Not So) Heartless" backer level :-)

Nerd Chat

Ok there are a lot of nerdy bands Kickstarting albums right now for Kickstarter's 10th birthday, and we are setting up a live chat with three of them this Tuesday at 6PM PDT.

Ask your questions about music, our current projects, our favorite snack foods, whatever, and hang out with us live on air! Starring:

The PDX Broadsides: Nerdy pop-folk trio with tight harmonies and songs about fandoms and feelings.
The Library Bards: Los Angeles-based nerd parodists and Twitch superfans.
Misbehavin' Maidens: Bawdy, nerd-folk comedy quartet focused on feminist and LGBTQ+ content.

It's going to be super fun - watch us goof around on video and probably talk about stuff too. Sign up for the Facebook event or just come visit us on YouTube this Tuesday! It's going to be really fun, and I hope you'll consider backing all of us :)

Whew, so much stuff! As always, thank you for sharing our link, and for being great people. We love our nerd music community!

BEHIND THE SONG: "House of the Wind"
about 5 years ago – Fri, May 03, 2019 at 01:20:07 PM

Hi everyone, it's Christian again!

We want to give you all a closer look at some of the songs on "Relatable Content", and we are starting off with "House of the Wind".

It’s always fun to realize which fandoms you haven’t written a song about. There are so many great works of fact and fiction that you can’t possibly cover them all, but somehow I’m always surprised when a new one gets suggested. When a backer from the "Trust Issues" Kickstarter asked for a song centered on the “Kingkiller” series by Patrick Rothfuss, I jumped at it. On one of our first dates, my wife recommended “The Name of the Wind” and I immediately got hooked, so I was excited to get to work.

In the series, there is a tavern called The Eolian, which hosts a kind of open mic contest on its stage. I wanted to write a song from the perspective of a singer who loves to go to The Eolian and perform. Drabs and jots are small coins that make up a silver talent, and that’s the entry fee to perform. If you do exceptionally well, you’re awarded with a set of silver pipes, so there's an goal above and beyond just entertaining the audience. The pipes are a kind of quality assurance certification, so they're highly prized.

I researched the name “Eolian” and found the theory that it came from “aeolian,” which is one of the modes in Western music. “Aeolian” is Greek in origin and means “related to the action of the wind.” I figure The Eolian might also be referred to colloquially as the House of the Wind. The affections of a musical audience might be just as capricious as the wind, too!

The lyrics pretty accurately describe the feeling of stepping onto a stage to perform, at least for me. It can be terrifying, but once you’re up there, there’s nothing like it.

Thank you for supporting "Relatable Content" through your pledges and your shares, and we really can't wait for you to hear this album!

It's HERE: Album Art! Art Prints! And a NEW Reward!
about 5 years ago – Fri, May 03, 2019 at 11:44:46 AM

Helllooo again! As of this minute, we're at 63%, $4657 from our goal! (And if we hit the $8000 marker today, we'll share a sample of "House of the Wind," the Pat Rothfuss-inspired song from yesterday's update!)

Album Art!!!

Today's news is very exciting: we have the album art from Aud Koch (WicDiv: 1923, Dark Horse, Marvel)...and it's GORGEOUS. You can get an art print of this (signed by us!) or of Ben Dewey's (Image, Dark Horse) fabulous cover art for our last album, Trust Issues, at every level $100+. We think it's definitely worth making the leap!

Wow, wow, wow. We are in LOVE.
Wow, wow, wow. We are in LOVE.

Aud's art was inspired by the tea party in Alice in Wonderland, the feeling of being overwhelmed by chaos, and some of the subjects of our previous and current songs. (How many can you spot? :)) It's beautiful and we think it's going to look amazing as a cover and print.

In addition, we added a new reward level, and modified one to make it even better:

New Level: Cover Songs!

At least once a week, someone says to us, "You should cover that!" We really focus on originals, but trust, we can turn a cover (or two. maybe three. or a whole lot.) and make them awesome.

For a precious few backers, let us make your dream come true. Disney? Theme songs? Nickelback? For you, we will. Find the level called "Anyway, Here's Wonderwall" and we'll make it happen for you. 5 slots available.

(Still want an original composition? We still have jingle and full-length song slots remaining!)

House Concert Update!

LIVE ON VIDEO! The house concert levels can be done in person OR live on the internet! If you want a private show but travel costs are prohibitive, this is a special offer we're making for the Kickstarter. Control our set list and spend some time with us *cue Grover* both NEEEAR and FAAAAR!

(Not sure how to host a house concert? Just ask Sharon Sutherland, who kindly hosted us for our first a few years ago and is THE EXPERT. It's not as hard as you'd think and we're really delightful Muppets up close.)

We are SO INCREDIBLY GRATEFUL for all your support. We've got a ways to go yet, so please keep spreading the word...and consider those delicious art prints. :D

- Misbehavin' Maidens, doing their 3rd album and covering our song "Smile!" on it! (Funded and on their way to their 4th stretch goal!)

- Library Bards, making nerdy ear-worm parodies (funded and climbing!)

- Ion the Young Shuttle, the adorable space book for kids by Kielen King (50% there!)

Studio Confessionals!
about 5 years ago – Tue, Apr 30, 2019 at 03:46:04 PM

Hi everybody, it's Christian here!

Well, our studio time has been very productive - taking two weekends has been the best idea, as we have been able to focus more attention on the songs on "Relatable Content' and make them as good as can be.

Every time we record an album, there's a corner that gets turned where the songs just become fully realized, and sometimes even more than we had hoped for. This definitely happened for me this time, and a good deal of the credit should go to Kevin Hahn, our producer. He has amazing instincts for what would serve a song, whether that's removing something or adding something else. We had fun doing overdubs, and I got to play drums again. Then we mixed everything and got creative, which is my favorite thing to do.

In between, we filmed a Kickstarter video (which you may have seen, and if not, go watch it - it's not your average boring Kickstarter video!), and recorded some reality-TV-style confessionals. None of us have seen the others' videos, so this should be... interesting.

WIthout any futher ado, we present here the first of the studio confessionals recorded during the making of "Relatable Content" - enjoy!

Thank you all so much for all your support - we *really* could not do all of this without you. Everything counts when it comes to this Kickstarter - money is great and gets us closer to our goal, but equally as important is word of mouth, so any way you can spread the word is amazing. We love you!

51% Funded! Live streams and tour updates!
about 5 years ago – Sat, Apr 27, 2019 at 06:34:21 PM

Less than 72 hours and we're up to 51% of our goal. That's incredible. Through your generosity and your shares, we are GETTING THERE. We have news to share today to say thank you!!!

See you, Space Cowboy.
See you, Space Cowboy.

LIVESTREAMS:

1) Since you got us to 50% before the end of the work week: in describing 5 past jobs I've had, I mentioned that one summer, I worked for honest-to-goodness travelling carnies. I said if we made that mark I'd tell the story live from my lab. I'm making good.

1:30 PM PDT today, live on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. Take a peek at Where The Placenta Science Happens, and hear an adventure from my wayward youth. If you can't make the livestream, it will also be on the internet afterwards, so...enjoy a special time. :)

2) We're in the studio again this weekend, adding bits and pieces that will make RELATABLE CONTENT just sparkle. We'll be streaming some additions tomorrow (Saturday) off and on all day, and likely again on Sunday. Come see the magic behind the madness. Or is it the other way around?

TOUR UPDATES:

We knew this one would be more of a marathon and less of a sprint (touring is EXPENSIVE, y'all), but you're already making us feel like this is possible. With that in mind, we want to share some news about RELATABLE CONTENT: THE TOUR.

We have confirmed venues in Raleigh (10/4) and Brooklyn (10/9), and we are working on Boston, DC area, and Philly now. If you know of anywhere that loves to host nerdy music (or if you want a house concert!), let us know!

In addition, in Raleigh and the DC area, we have confirmed GUEST ACTS!  In Raleigh, you'll be treated to the sultry sounds of our Doubleclicks Records labelsister, the incredible Juliana Finch. Juliana is a masterful storyteller using her music, with folk/rock/Americana roots. Her voice will get in your bones, and we're so excited to play with her in her stomping grounds.

At our DC area shows, of course it has to be Misbehavin' Maidens! This foursome have become our close friends and bring harmonies, cleverness, and straight-up bawdiness to the table. Before you get worried, they have PROMISED that they can do a clean set for an all-ages show, and then we'll turn them loose at a 21+ venue, where we'll bring our adult-set best, too. Stay tuned for dates, but in the meantime, check out their Kickstarter for their new album, Swearing Is Caring, where they are covering our song "Smile!". (Which you can get pins of in our Kickstarter. It's a very circular friendship and we love it. :))

Dem Maidens Tho.

We'll have more news, including Behind The Song updates, and why Together Breakfast brunches with us are the ABSOLUTE BEST. Tell us about your favorite brunches and any questions you might have in the comments below!

See you on livestreams shortly and this weekend. Please keep spreading the word, we're more than halfway there (cue Bon Jovi) and with your help, we're going to make RELATABLE CONTENT real.
